TCAT’s Move

With the upcoming Toronto elections (October 27, 2014), one of the main issues being raised by all candidates is Public Transit. One of the main missions of the Toronto Centre for Active Transportation (TCAT) has always been the unified promotion of a “better cycling and pedestrian environment in Toronto.” And now with the coming elections, public transit is at the forefront of the debates. TCAT has decided to lend its voice to the promotion of public transit. Further, TCAT has pushed for better walking and cycling infrastructure in the GTA and Hamilton.

TCAT’s vision for the GTA and Hamilton has always been “vibrant cities with clean air, a healthy population, and a transportation system that prioritizes walking and cycling.” And this vision is coming to life in their new campaign entitled “It’s Your Move,” a series that is a sounding call for investments in public transit and active transportation. The It’s Your Move series joins a coalition of community leaders who are speaking out for action regarding new transportation funding. TCAT has just released their third video for It’s Your Move which features Susan Eng, the vice president for Advocacy at CARP, a non-profit organization committed to advocating for social change. In the video, Susan Eng speaks of the importance of walking and cycling due to her childhood of growing up in downtown Toronto. Walking and cycling are an integral part of any liveable city because it allows you to connect to a city at ground level. It provides opportunities for social connection with the world around you.

As highlighted in one of our previous posts, the Toronto Board of Health has highlighted several recommendations to reduce the burden of illnesses caused by air pollution by adopting a city filled with more public transportation and pedestrian friendly streets rather than vehicular traffic.

To support TCAT’s It’s Your Move campaign, pleases spread and promote their videos as well as their The Big Move campaign. A good start as to why cities should invest in active transportation, TCAT has released a backgrounder article that examines the benefits and importance of active transportation in a region like the GTA and Hamilton. Further, additional background for The Big Move campaign can be found here.
